INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON

LITERATURE AND SOCIETY: A POSTMODERN REVIEW

JANUARY 19-21, 2017

Literature has always been a reflection of society, mostly contemporary, at times also earlier, mythical, or fanciful. To grasp the essence of any writer or his work, we look into the essentials of his writings – the sort of subjects he has chosen to write about, the style and language used in the work. Invariably, all these aspects of the literary work are related, one way or another, to the conditions of life that the writer has encountered and confronted. It is within these parameters that the value and significance of any writer or work has to be evaluated and assessed.

Every age has its own individual perspective of life as well as literature, having distinctive qualities of its own that set it apart from all others belonging to previous times. During the same age also there is always scope for a variety of form and content which different writers use making innovative and path-breaking experiments, adding to the ever-evolving body of the national, regional or linguistic tradition.

To explore all these dimensions it seems necessary that a galaxy of scholars is invited to come out with the contemporary knowledge on the subject, adding at the same time each individual’s own particular contribution. To explore the subject in the postmodern context would update the scholarship, making at the same time a critical review of all that has come out in earlier times. The present event is planned precisely to meet out the needs of present-day scholarship, updating it to the postmodern perspective which is the dominant theoretical apparatus we use for looking at life and literature.
