Department of Bio-Informatics
Bioinformatics is the conceptualizing Biology in terms of molecules and applying “Informatics Techniques” such as applied Mathematics, Computer science and Statistics to understand and organize the information associated with the molecules and accelerate the biological research on a large scale.
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research area and is the application of computer technology for the management of biological information. The need for Bioinformatics has been precipated by the explosion of publicly available genomic information. In recognition of this, Universities and Institutions have introduced Bioinformatics at graduate and postgraduate level.
The ultimate goal of Bioinformatics is to better understand a living cell and how it functions at the molecular level. Bioinformatics consists of two subfields: the development of computational tools and databases and the application of these tools and databases in generating biological knowledge to better understand living systems.
SCOPE AND NEED OF BIOINFORMATICS:
The job currently available in Bioinformatics involves the design and implementations of programmes and systems for the storage management and analysis of vast amount of DNA sequence data. Programming skills in addition to extensive knowledge of molecular biology packages (GCG, BLAST, FASTA etc.); web designing, programming skills including HTML, PERL, JAVA and C++ are important features of this curriculum.
APPLICATIONS;
- Bioinformatics has major impact on many areas of Biotechnology and Biomedical sciences.
- It has applications in knowledge based drug designing, forensic DNA analysis and Agricultural Biotechnology.
- Bioinformatics tools are being used in agriculture as well.
