                                  Departmental Profile

English, being the world language and an essential instrument in educating the masses has played a vital role in imparting knowledge along with other languages and various subjects in different streams. The Department of English has been working and shouldering the responsibilities in the progress of DAV College For Girls, Yamunanagar since its inception in the year 1958. English was introduced as a compulsory subject for all the streams. It continues to be so till date. Considering the ever increasing demands for the specialized study of English Literature, the college brought Honours Course in English Literature as an additional course in 1984-85 for those who aimed at enhancement. The encouraging result and distinctions in this Honours Course for a few years inspired us to take a leap and we introduced Post Graduation in the year 1989.

Seeing the rising focus on Spoken English and its functional use in the applied fields of the practical world, we started Functional English as an optional subject in 2006 at Under Graduate level. A Language Lab equipped with latest gadgets and 31 computers and Language Software is an asset to the Department. Spoken English is also taught as a skill in the special course for Personality development. Special remedial classes are arranged for weak and reserved category of students. Recently, we have started teaching to the students of B.Voc. from the session 2014-15.

The focus on English language as a skill to develop the personality, certainly, boosts the efforts in securing better jobs in teaching, creative writing, media, communications and PR . Students, well-equipped with linguistic skills, keep participating in declamations, debates, poetical recitation, elocution and quiz contests, seminars and cultural activities held at college/ inter college/university levels.

The English section of the college library has significant number of standard books that can be helpful not only for the students of Honours and P.G Courses but also useful for standard research of M.Phil/Ph.D level. Highly qualified staff adorned with M.Phil/Ph.D degrees is the strength of the Department. The Department has set up a culture of organizing National and International seminars and Conferences. In the year 2004, the Department organised its first ever National seminar on “Indian Writing in English” which attracted great scholars of international fame. Till date we have organized 7 such seminars and the 8th is scheduled to be held from January 8 to 10,2015.
